There is no movie or drama that I have watched more than five times. Once I’ve seen something, I lose interest and never watch it again. However, there is one exception: The Shawshank Redemption. If I happen to flip through TV channels and it’s on, I stop and watch it. Strangely, this movie makes me put off my tasks and keeps me captivated. Still, I don’t go out of my way to watch it repeatedly. No movie or drama has ever held me captive twice. No movie or drama has ever surprised me. Most are predictable, and they don’t really stimulate me in any special way. Of course, there are occasionally interesting movies or dramas, but I only care about what happens next—once I know the previous part, it no longer holds my attention.
So what makes a ‘masterpiece’ that I can watch again and again without ever getting tired of it? If I were to name such works, I would mention the Bible and the Buddhist scriptures. The Bible has a clear beginning and end, while the Buddhist scriptures are like an endless journey of interpretation. The Bible tells a story with a clear goal and conclusion, whereas the Buddhist scriptures offer a continuous unfolding of new beginnings. The Buddhist scriptures are vast in their potential for interpretation, and their possibilities for expansion are almost infinite. I find myself more drawn to the Buddhist scriptures than the Bible. While the Bible has its own depth, it’s the Buddhist scriptures that open up infinite paths of understanding. It feels like exploring an endless universe, and the journey of self-discovery within it is what makes it so fascinating.
