Modern society is an era of desire. Every day, advertisements, social media, and the dazzling surroundings urge us to own more and achieve better. In this whirlwind of temptation, what should we choose? While desire is the driving force of life, when it loses balance with moderation, life can quickly become chaotic and hollow.

It is crucial to understand the essence of what we seek to own. We should pursue value rather than desire for mere possession. For instance, a home cluttered with impulsively purchased items may feel empty despite being full of things. On the other hand, pursuing meaningful goals and values can make life more abundant and fulfilling.

Desire itself is not inherently bad. It is, in fact, a fundamental energy for growth. However, without moderation and patience, this energy can lose direction and lead to destructive outcomes. Historically, humanity has upheld moderation and patience as virtues, striving to maintain balance through religion, ethics, and morality. Yet, modern society, under the guise of freedom, encourages unchecked consumption of desires, leading to the destruction of many things.

Capitalism thrives on people’s desires. Yet, growth without moderation damages the environment, fractures human relationships, and dilutes the true essence of life. Therefore, we must place desire on the compass of moderation. While desire is the fuel for growth, moderation acts as the map that ensures the fuel is directed appropriately.

What do we desire?

Material desires increase possessions and clutter our surroundings. In contrast, a desire for values enriches the quality and meaning of life. For instance, instead of buying new clothes, investing that money in learning a new skill can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Ultimately, desire determines the direction of our lives. By reflecting on our desires, practicing moderation, and pursuing a balanced life, we can preserve both growth and integrity. Starting today, ask yourself: “What do I truly desire? Does this desire enrich my life?”

Desire is energy, but moderation is the compass that guides it.
